That’s class Pete! Your area in North Wales sounds like it’s coming on amazingly. I’m visiting a friend in Y Felinheli this weekend, such a beautiful part of the country.

The natural arrival of oaks or birches could take decades or centuries if the seed sources are distant or blocked by land use… planting them accelerates the development from scrubland to mature woodland. They strengthen biodiversity earlier, kickstart ecosystems and make them more resilient

Allowing nature to take the lead is the goal, but there is real value in planting diverse native species that might struggle to arrive naturally - keystone trees like the Oak and Birch for instance. Kickstart regeneration with biodiversity powerhouses!

And with that understanding does it green light us planting diverse native mixes… Rewilding plus strategic native planting. Curious to hear your thoughts.

- but I sometimes wonder if we’ve simply altered the landscape too much that we’ve suppressed native seed sources so deeply that the forest might never return on its own to what it was.

@irishrainforest.bsky.social Sorry Eoghan, you defo missed this as I replied very late. I did my thesis on regenerative agriculture and to say you featured would be an understatement… but this idea plagued me.

I love the beauty of rewilding through natural regeneration…

Amazing Eoghan! @irishrainforest.bsky.social
Do you see any big issues with kickstarting native forests using the Miyawaki method or similar? Is your preference not to plant? #ClimateChange
