I was sitting there, teary eyed with a pit in my stomach watching no one but Elphaba stand up to help the animals, to say no to the wizard. To realize what he was doing was wrong. And what did she get for it? They wanted to kill her! And who hid her for safety? The animals! ITS RIGHT THERE YALL

The wizard was literally and figuratively silencing and erasing the animals. That’s all he saw them as. Animals. He didn’t care that his experiments were causing them harm and distress. Just like how the doctors in the camps experimented on the Jews. They were seen as animals

and in case you missed it at the beginning of the film, when Elphaba got angry at Chiz and parts of the building crumbled, stone that had the wizard’s face etched into it fell, and underneath it was a stone with animals, most likely the original presidents of Chiz/Oz
