I think with this piece in particular, people are defending the writer not so much because they think that being snarky about a piece is wrong—they all do so—but because they (correctly) detect that the piece is being attacked for its sexual politics, and they want to defend those sexual politics.

And look, sorry, it just can’t be that no one else gets rights unless those who formerly held them exclusively—white men—also receive constant emotional gratification. That’s not how a democracy works. It’s not fair that I lose my right to an abortion because someone more important than me is sad.

In a patriarchal system that is often about assigning moral debts and entitlements on the basis of gender, the demand that the left (again, read: women) be kinder to men is actually just a reassertion of a sexist demand: that women prioritize men’s emotional wellbeing over their own dignity.
