I would run both and leverage both pro’s.

Zigbee: generally cheaper, better availability and more types of devices. Devices can be more finicky to set up, it’s marginally less reliable and the quality of individual devices can be lower.

Z-Wave: The exact opposite of what I mentioned for zigbee.

Isn’t that just a whole other instance of a Home Assistant 😉

Just go to Settings -> Area, Labels and Zones -> Home

Please report it as a bug to Home Assistant. I’m not 100% sure but I think the Sections view is technically still in beta. I’m sure they’d love the feedback.

I suspect the quality has more to do with the audio processor than the mic itself, although a mic array certainly would help.

I’m not aware of any way to upgrade the experience with the Atom Echo, unfortunately.

Personally I’m very happy with the BlitzWolf BW-SHP15, they are Zigbee based, but I don’t know if they have US version.

I’ve heard good things about the Third Reality Plugs, I assume they do have a US version.

Another great indication to use locally controlled smart home devices as much as possible.

I can highly recommend you to try it out, although to be fair it’s a massive rabbit hole so be prepared.

That’s bold 😉 From experience I’d say it’s better to be wrong even though you’re right 😂

Yeah the UI is confusing on that front sometimes. Coming from yaml automations I quickly learned the UI isn’t always indicative of possibilities and limits.

My transitions worked as expected tonight, so 5 minutes doesn’t seem to be the actual limit.
January 31, 2025 at 11:43 PM
This is the first time I’m hearing light transitions max out at 5 minutes. I’ve setup some 20 minute transitions during the evening, so I guess I need to pay attention if they adhere to the 20 minutes tonight.

Great write up.

You don’t necessarily need a remote to make the switch. When you remove a light from the Hue bridge it automatically goes into pairing mode. Makes it really easy to adopt it in your preferred zigbee controller.

It depends, do you spend a lot of time changing settings in Zwave JS? As long as I’m not buying new Zwave devices, I use the dashboard maybe once or twice a year.

Did you set up you automations with device_id’s or entity_id’s? If the latter, migration isn’t that daunting. Just transfer the naming.

Would this be a solution?

Hope your recovery goes smoothly. Will your limited mobility be temporary or are new devices an option?

First, motion activated lights. In a multistory home with a partner, add an ‘intercom’ to notify your partner if you need help. Depending on the climate connected heating/cooling can be helpful.

Why would you? No need to add stress to your hopefully relaxing vacation. Even if it’s just a minute or two.
January 24, 2025 at 6:37 PM
Just one, Home Assistant is a giant rabbit hole, enjoy!
January 22, 2025 at 9:09 PM
I love to hear more about this too. This sounds like a preview of the future we’re heading for!
January 22, 2025 at 8:15 PM
Yes, but it only supports device types Apple has implemented. So some sensors you’ve setup in Home Assistant don’t show up in Apple Home. It’s a limitation on Apple’s side.

Lights, switches, motion sensors, air quality sensors, media players, camera’s and security alarms all work.

Well deserved, congratulations!

I get why they picked this time but I totally agree with you, it should be user configurable. Lots of professions have 24/7 shifts for example.
January 16, 2025 at 5:38 PM
This has to do with the clean up processes #homeassistant does right before 4:45 am. This ensures the backups are as small as possible.

I believe they are evaluating if the time will be user configurable in the future.
January 15, 2025 at 11:20 PM
Oh for sure! But could make it easier in the future in case the USB connectivity was the issue.
