It had been one thing to be there, to witness lashings and beasts and Captain Crozier’s addiction and withdrawals, to walk out and do what they had to to survive, to speak in coded whispers about what if and if things get worse. It was horrifying, nausea inducing, but at least it was real. The admiralty parties, the commander’s uniform he did nothing to earn, the constant congratulations and prying questions, they make Edward wish to do nothing but go home and curl up in a ball and never return to polite society again. Were he not such a weak, greedy, wicked man, he wouldn’t go at all. And yet here he is, for the third time in two months, allowing nosy people to ask him questions he doesn’t know how to answer, to praise him for invading a place that had no wish for him to be there, in exchange for nothing more than the hope of a glimpse of black silk hair and pale eyes. Even worse, two hours in, he’s now nearly certain he is to be disappointed once again.
