I saw it used that way plenty in my religious studies undergraduate courses, and other sources online also consider all of them as being under the umbrella of Zen. Wikitionary notes the term is associated with both China and Japan can refer to both the entire branch and the specific sublineage.

White had the same format as black and Native Americans on the census. The really weird outlier on the census is Asians which have granular breakdowns unlike everyone else.
