I think there's another possibility, albeit heinous, to consider. Perhaps some of the Dems may have been physically threatened by the admin as part of their exerting power and control.

I feel that on some level it's related to monotheism, one of the selling points being the ability to offload all of one's problems to a singular being who would take care of everything.

Our dog is inconsolable when thunder or fireworks is present. At least with storms, I can predict the best times to medicate him, but fireworks tend to have no warning, rhyme, or reason.
