Not saying humans are headed that direction. We just don't need traumatic mating to reproduce. We don't even NEED to reproduce. Not nearly as much as we used to. So we aren't. This can cause bottlenecks and build up of harmful genes. Diverse mating behaviors (varied gender and sexuality) avoid this

Look at birds. Their mating rituals are absurdly complex. But they can do them and survive. It opens up more ecological niches for them to fill based purely on whatever dance they do or what colors their feathers are and so much more. Worth mentioning >99% of bird species don't have penises.

The difference is the stability and access to infrastructure that wasn't there in the 1700s. It takes longer for enough people to become desperate. We are though.
