The Wallace
By Blind Harry

Read this if: You want the Venn diagram between Canterbury Tales and Braveheart. This is 15th Century poetry in Scots about how William Wallace was the best ever and the English deserved to get killed by him.

A Separate Peace
By John Knowles

Read if: You want a mid-century coming of age book that parallels the loss of innocence with the every growing shadow of the War. A solid choice if you’re in a fancy book club.

(Bonus: I last read this book 25 years ago, and stole it from my HS library)

The Dispossessed
By Ursela K. Le Guin

Read this book if: You want a seminal work of Sci-Fi that gives beautiful and complex insights into society, freedom, barriers, suffering, and personal choice; while never feeling like the author is trying to shove an interpretation upon you

Assassin’s Apprentice
Farseer Trilogy #1
By Robin Hobb

Read this if: You have a desire for classic fantasy with political intrigue, that has the twist and turns of a big saga but without the grittiness and darkness of other modern fantasy.

An Anthology of Scottish Folktales

Read this if: You enjoy the odd nature of folk tales, & want to read some through a #Scottish lens; covering everything from myths to morality plays. Also good if you want a set of slightly bizarre bedtime stories to read to a child

Last Argument of Kings
The First Law book 3
By Joe Abercrombie

Read this book if: You’re a fan of the series and want to see the grittiness all culminate in an epic, driven by deeply flawed but interesting characters.

Under Milk Wood
By Dylan Thomas

Read this book if:
You want a play that shows a slice of life in midcentury rural Wales, described in vivid & evocative poetry by the greatest Welsh poet since Dafydd ap Gwilym.

Bone Silence
Revenger book 3
By Alastair Reynolds

Read this book if: You’ve enjoyed the first two in the series, and want to see a story that started off about space pirates end with revelations about the entire origins of civilization

Mort
Discworld bk 4
By Terry Pratchett

Read this if: You’re a fan of Pratchett & want to dive into the Death series. It’s fun, silly, and lays the foundation for lots of great lore later on. Probably not where to start reading Pratchett, but a good one to go back to

Had a few unplanned additions to the pile in Aug/September, and some things got shuffled. Here’s the current #TBR pile that should last the rest of the year:

I try to branch out and read stuff outside of my usual lane, and I vaguely remembered people talking about The Horus Heresy from #Warhammer 40k as being good.
I have a passing knowledge of Warhammer, so I thought I’d take a look, maybe get a new trilogy!

A 64 BOOK SERIES?!?

Tehanu
Earthsea book 4
Ursula K. le Guin

Read this book if: You’ve read the first three Earthsea books, and want a conclusion to the story that gives a more grounded coda to the epic. Imagine “scouring of the shire” as a sequel novel.

The Pearl
By John Steinbeck

Read this book if: You want a quick read, but a harrowing tale that will depress you & stick with you for decades. It’s been 25 years since I last read it, I remembered no details, just how bleak I felt after (and I feel that way again now). This is Steinbeck at his best

Bleak House
By Charles Dickens

Read if: You want a long twisting tale that feels disjointed at the start, but eventually pulls together to form one giant & complete narrative. Dickens has some of his most extreme and fun/despicable characters in this, & knows how to use them

Slow Bullets
By Alastair Reynolds

Read this book if: You want a quick, easy sci-fi novella with great world-building, and a fresh take on a well-worn trope of being the last survivors of a civilization.

The Turn of the Screw
By Henry James

Read this book if: you want a classic gothic/horror story that uses ambiguity to fuel the psychological tension. This book is short enough that it would be best read in one sitting, preferably in a large empty manor in the autumn
