Below is a snapshot from one such employer-provided policy. It only pays out for a lifetime disability under very specific conditions. That means many people might not be covered when they need it most.

That’s a good start, but here’s the problem: these plans are provided for free for a reason: they’re cheap.
The fine print often limits coverage in ways that make it hard to collect benefits in a true worst-case scenario.

That’s what disability insurance does; it protects your ability to earn an income. If you can’t work due to illness or injury, disability insurance can replace part of that lost income.

Many people already have a long-term disability policy through their workplace.
