Recognizing those who excelled while facing prejudice, who were the "first", who broke barriers, shattered glass ceilings, and showed what could be achieved is not divisive, it is a great strength of our country. 🇺🇸

…so much so that even recognizing that their achievements were notewothy BECAUSE they overcame the obstacles of race, gender, ethnicity is, in itself, divisive and unfair.

Apparently, recognizing the achievements of women and minorities who overcame significant obstacles imposed by the prevailing culture and still managed to succeed somehow takes away from the achievements of white men…

This began to change as I entered my teenage years. Around that time you began to hear about Black history, women’s history, and eventually Hispanic, Asian, and other ethnic and interest groups having their history, heritage and culture celebrated in the wider community. It opened my eyes.

If there was a black, brown, or Asian face on TV or in movies they almost always played servants, bad guys, or some other stereotyped character. As a white kid living in a mostly white community, I didn't notice.
