The humbled survivor

The Mani

Initial sketch of the Mani, commisioned by the Challenger Estate circa 1912. While fossil remains are known of this bird, at the time, only more complete specimens place them in the spotlight, and thus the artist possibly referenced even the distantly related Gastonis. Scientific Name: Psilopterus pequenocacador (Bare Winged Little Hunter) Overall dimensions: .9 meters at the hips at 20 lbs Following the extinction of most of the planet's non avian dinosaurs, mammals have famously bounced into most niches. However, for a good chunk of time, Australia and South America, isolated from other continents, had ecosystems of there own. In the case of the latter, there were carnivorous marsupial relatives, terrestrial crocodiles, a whole assortment of hooved mammals, and most famous of all: Terror Birds. Their demise has often been associated with the arrival of denizens from North America following the Interchange, but climate change thanks to the rising of the Andes is perhaps what did them instead (though Jurupari and raccoon relatives could have contributed however). Atop the tepui, roosting in the forests, hunting in the pampas, is the last of this great family: The Mani. From afar, their diminutive size would mistake them for the Seriama birds that also roam about the tepui. It's really their diet that sets them apart. Following the Interchange, tapirs, horse foals, even an Alfinete calf are fair game as they are chased down and slain with a good strike of their hooked beak. With the temperament of the cassowary across the Pacific (even Uaica avoid them), and rewilding efforts expanding their range as far north at the Yucatan Peninsula, civilians are advised to keep their distance and stay in groups. If not for the beak, they can deliver such a kick as to disembowel a small dog.

The Water Lady

Initial sketch comissioned by the Challenger Estate Circa 1912. As the directions of the commission involves a "fish lizard," the artist in question looked to fossils of Ichthyosaurs. Truth be told, the actual animal is far different; even adolescent individuals only pose a passing resemblance. The modern depiction of the actual animal. Scientific Name: Ichthyobranchus iara (Fish Gilled Water Lady), formerly Ichthyosaurus iara. Overall Dimensions: .3 meters in girth by 3.7 meters in length at 300 lbs Understandably, when regarding the impact of the Great American Interchange, terrestrial biogeography, especially on a macro level, is what's usually studied. But water biomes are affected as well; numerous tropical fish from South America have made their home alongside the coasts of North America. Historically, the Amazon Rainforest is home to perhaps the greatest assortment of amphibians on the planet. Indeed, the tepui itself is home to species otherwise considered extinct such as the Golden Toad, and have been proven vital for pharmaceutical study. But compared to frogs, salamander relatives don't have much of a representation, and its here where such a most odd creature like the Iara boggles the mind. Relatives of the North American Hellbender and Giant Salamanders of Asia, the Iara surpasses both as the largest extant amphibian. And with such a large size, Iara can prey upon turtles, half penguins, and even young caimans. Tadpoles are more active swimmers, resembling more of lungfish than what their future holds. While they may have held a presence during glacial episodes, rewilding still isn't allowed. However, as amphibians are sensitive to changes in their surroundings, one immature individual may be provided to test the quality of local water supplies, using the purity of the tepui's water as a basis. Should the animal perish, an autopsy is performed regarding chemical absorption, the results reported and necessary action demanded. Otherwise, poaching is strictly forbidden, citing a similar conflict with the Chinese Giant Salamander.

The Winged Devil

An illustration of the Pterosaur attack in a 1914 reissue of the original novel. The modern depiction of the actual animal. Scientific Name: Jurupari summerli (Summerlee's Jurupari), formerly Pterodactylus summerli. Overall Dimensions: 1.5 meters at the shoulder by a seven meter wingspan at roughly 230 lbs. When the team set up camp at the base of the tepui, Professor Sumerlee noticed first hand the creature you see before you, but at as first glance assumed it to be a stork. It was later that night that the Jurupari came to call. Professor Challenger himself brought a hatchling to the Academy, proving once and for all that Maple White's research on the tepui is valid. Recovery of ancestral species like Quetzalcotalus cemented its place as and azhdarchid. Compared to other pterosaurs, azhdarchids were more terrestrial; indeed, the Jurupari could be mistaken for a giraffe while it walks alongside horses and tapire-iauara. While it is understood that pterosaurs were feathered, the Jurupari takes it to a tee thanks to the ice ages. Their size alone can scare smaller predators from their kills, though Mapinguari can easily swat one aside. With paleontological study limited, the questions abound: were they diverse before now? Were there larger forms? It could stand to reason that they could've caused the extinction of most sparrasodont mammals and terror birds, and the total extinction of sebecid crocodiles (as far as we know). Could they have spread to North America before the interchange? And if so, why haven't they done so again with the planet becoming warmer? The answers are ever shrouded as the protections placed on them, as have their saurian neighbors.

The Farm Thief

Saci Perere
Initial sketch of the Saci Perere comissioned by the Challenger Estate Circa 1912. If not for Archaeopteryx beforehand, this not only spurred the knowledge of active dinosaurs, but feathered ones on larger forms. The modern depiction of the Saci Perere. Scientific Name: Cegonhasaurus colheitadeira (Harvesting Stork Lizard), formerly Coelophysis colheitadeira. Overall dimensions: 1 meter tall at the hips by 4 meters in length at 520 lbs. Well before the disappearance of Maple White, farmers have spoken of a dark creature darting in and out of their property, the Saci Perere they call it. Further inspection by the Challenger Estate have shown this beast; as beautiful and as odd as a bat. Not so much a lizard, but halfway a bird. For a time, Unenlagiines like the Saci Perere were considered dromaeosaurs like Deinonychus or Velociraptor, research as of late considers them closer to birds (They are closest to each other with some margin of error, nonetheless). As paleontological study is limited on the tepui, it's disputed whether the Saci Perere is descended from Austroraptor, or from another species that gained a large size. As theorized, the Saci Perere is piscivorous, but has been known to consume hatchling caimans, small birds, and mammals. A smaller relative, the Lagartopinguim/Half Penguin (Amazoniavenator glutao), with it's longer wingspan and webbed feet, actively hunts in the waterways of the tepui. Both do fall prey to Jaguars and Sabre Cats from time to time. While conservation protections are at their highest as with the other dinosaurs, the Saci Perere has been cited throughout the lowland Amazon. Poaching for their feathers and meat are largely unavoidable, try as they may.

The Lizard Cow

Initial sketch commissioned of the Gadolagarto by the Challenger Estate circa 1912. Modern rendition of the animal. Scientific Name: Guzeratosaurus horridon (The Guzera Lizard with the Rough Teeth), Formerly Iguanodon horridon Overall Dimensions: Three meters tall at the hips by 8.2 meters in length at 3.8 tons. The Cattle of the Cretaceous. Such a nickname easily provided for hadrosaurs to the point that the color pattern akin to the Guzera cattle warrented the compound name Gadolagarto (Cattle Lizard). Descended from the likes of Secernosaurus, as with all extant non avian dinosaurs, the presence of the Gadolagarto is a miracle. The oddity, however, is that this remains the only hadrosaur genus remaining to this day. The family was certainly successful, the Gadolagarto can consume grasses, but it could be that the cooling world doing a number on their preferred habitat doing a number on them. The presence of notoungulates and ground sloths prevented any further diversification after the fact. Taken a niche akin to bison up north, they cross the Pampas in massive herds, often conglomerating with the native horses as their size can offer them protection from some of the tepui's predators. Youngsters are easily taken down by Sabre Cats and Southern Bears, and the Mae-do-Ouru can take on an adult with a well crafted ambush in the jungle. While the rewilding potential is tempting, such an effort is halted nonetheless, and protections of the highest regard are implemented.

Artwork of Krossbow. Basically Klingers from DKC2 donning the Robin Hood costume, they reside in the treetop levels throughout the game and would shoot you as you ascend. Not much else to say, just that the climbing mechanics are dumbed down in DKC3 (what happened to climbing up two ropes at once).

Around a week ago, I found a blurry image of thumbnails the original Sharptooth's walk cycle.

Be that as it may, I was able to animate a walk cycle as best as I could, and more or less found out their top speed.

Kommodore X

Artwork of Kommodore X. Not an OC this time, as this is based on the scrapped Mr. X character for DKC2. It took some thought on what to place him in, as K. Rool was already a Captain, and Commander sounds higher than Baron. At the last minute, turns out Commodore is higher than Commander; and yet the only saving grace for Rool's importance is nobility. Anywho, incorporating Kommodore X is basically having him be the one to commandeer the Knautilus. And you do fight him numerous times throughout the overworld, with each fight giving you a clue to finding Krematoa (of course, a veteran player of DKC3 would be able to raise the world beforehand). Upon completing all the worlds and scuttling the Knautilus, you fight Kommodore in person. To avoid a rehash of K. Roolenstein's fight, Kommodore's is a combination of both Kudgel and Kleaver's fight from DKC2; a few volleys of attacks (including some while he is in the background, the one element from the vanillage game I'd incorporate) and you are handed a steel barrel to smite him.

Kount Krocula*

Artwork of Krocula. Long story short, this *was* Krusha given new life as Lord of Darkness. How K. Rool was able to best the Kount is unknown, but he's now amongst the Kremling Kreeps as a fan boss. Using Krusha's invincible gray variety from DKC1, the colors of his robes may harken The Beast from Beauty and the Beast while also trying to clue players in as to his origin. Since the Kongs don't carry holy weapons, and the Kremlings would be smart enough not to store holy water in barrels, the only way to put him to rest is to open the curtains that span the hallway of his mansion.

Krone*
Artwork of Krone. Wordplay is a parody of crone, a synonym for a witch. There was some thought for incorporating some aspects of the Skeksis from the Dark Crystal (watching the show and movie got me on a craze). But to avoid going to much, I simply went for a simple witch design, and even then I try not to evoke Gruntilda. The design of the broomstick, with a crocodile head on top, is a reference to Jafar's cobra staff however. Basically, a combination of Klump from DKC1, and Kloak from DKC2, this would be the DKC answer to Kamek from the mario games. Deploying hexes atop their broomstick, the best way to destroy the witches is either using Squitter or a barrel.

Redesigning Kuff n Klout

Promotional render of the Kuff n Klout Twins. Which one is who, we never know. And that's why I'm redesigning this burly brutes. Some of the oldest Punch and Judy puppets. Throughout historical times, puppets, and to say circus clowns, have always put a smile to everyone's face throughout the world. ... Well... Almost everybody. Clowns aren't everyone's taste. In fact, some are downright terrified of clowns, even though the act isn't by any means malicious. This is capitalized in other media, from Pennywise from Stephen King's "IT," to The Joker from DC Comics. And so, in this redesign, I make them not only as clowns, I also made them distinguished from each other. In a nod to Flotsam and Jetsam from The Little Mermaid, Kuff's left eye and Klout's right eye are a brown color while the other eye is purple and green respectively.

Redesigning Bazuka

Promotional render for Bazuka. This small, draconic Kremling, wielding his one namesake. It's little wonder he can hold it for this long. So what could I do to redesign him? A partially damaged T-800 robot from the original Terminator movie. I dabbled a little into the idea of making Bazuka into a cyborg, but I couldn't find a balance this way. Then I realized, with the Super Nintendo came Super Metroid. And to date, I never recalled any references to Metroid in any other SNES game. Thus, this one time for now, I incorporated pop culture and game Bazuka the Chozo Armor. Specifically, the gravity suit to not clash with his red scales. And while he may have the Power Blaster, it still only shoots barrels and cannonballs.

Redesigning Kopter

Promotional render for Kopter. This one too has something fun to look at; just a little guy that can fly through the air by just spinning around with propellors in hand. As with Bazuka, they are indestructible. Promotional image for Krook from DKC2. Why do I bring this up, you may ask? Well, remember how I'm going with the horror genre with these redesigns? Instead of holding onto the propellors, Kopter's lower arms *are* the propellors in this redesign. As with Kutlass and the redesign of Kobble, letting them make the first move is the best option. And that's still only on land when you can best them. They still do fly and are indestructible as such.

Redesigning Re-Koil

Original Promotional Renders of Re-Koil. Of the original designs here, this one actually looks fun to look at. Bouncing on a springy tail which may be why they have a goofy look to them. Sufficed to say, I can continue to push the design. The history of the Chuck E. Cheese animatronic over the years. Designs change, robotics and programming upgraded. Like with clowns, they aren't every kids' cup of tea, to the point that one kid became inspired to make Five Knights at Freddy's. And thus giving me the inspiration to redesign Re-Koil as an animatronic set loose. The eyeballs still stay googly to give the impression of, say, Cookie Monster from Sesame Street. A shirt with a letter K hides what else is underneath. There would be a second variety hiding in a box that would surprise you (not in any way to confuse with Mad Jack from DK64).

Redesigning Knocka et al.

The original design for Knocka and friends. The games answer to the Klobbers from DKC2, only now they stay in the barrel entirely. Some climb, explode on contact, and throw bombs. Promotional render for the first boss of DKC3, Belcha. The reason I bring this up is because if K. Rool made this as he did with KAOS, surely he'd make barrel type enemies on a smaller scale, right? Thus bringing me to redesigning the enemy(s) themselves to resemble the boss in question. They are no longer a Kremling in a barrel, but a robot, and may give off Futurama vibes.
