I recently rewatched it for homework reasons, and while the “Just Say No” stuff hasn’t aged well, the kernel of the story is still compelling. Along with Merritt Butrick’s nuanced portrayal of addiction, you also get Judson Scott’s smarmy, slimy dealer. Two TWOK alums in one TNG!

Yes it was. He was good in all three of his Trek appearances.

As a lapsed trumpet player, I’ve always loved the cornet solo of the TOS theme that closes the film.

Yep, still love this film. An underrated classic.

“If I hadn’t tried…the cost would have been my soul.”

Again, Shatner’s delivery is on point. If you haven’t seen TOS, you still understand the depth of their relationship.

I like that this movie essentially has two climaxes: the escape from Genesis, and the Mount Seleya sequence.

Props to the production team for continuing to make Vulcan feel truly *alien*. #TSFSposting

DeForest Kelley once again demonstrating why he and Bones are my favorites of the TOS trio in his scene with Spock’s body. #TSFSposting

This is still my favorite “destroying the [hero starship] scene”. Well directed, acted, and scored. #TSFSposting

Between his eulogy for Spock in TWOK and the “Klingon bastards” scene, you’ll never convince me that Shatner is a bad actor.

It’s my headcanon that McCoy’s would-be charter captain is Tiburonian, like Dr. Sevrin. #TSFSposting

That subtle eye movement when Saavik asks David how the microbes on Spock’s casket evolved so quickly. Starts sowing seeds of doubt in Saavik’s (and the audience’s) mind, but it’s so fast that you might not catch it on your first watch. #TSFSposting

As I mentioned upthread, I like that the script has Kirk learn what happened to Spock and McCoy organically, rather than having him just *know*. #TSFSposting

ST3’s mind meld scene is one of my favorite interpretations of the procedure. Mark Lenard grasped how to convey emotion without betraying Sarek’s innate emotional control. #TSFSposting

I think the script tried to make J.T. Esteban a polar opposite of Kirk, but in so doing, it made him look weak and ineffectual. #TSFSposting

“Oh, yes. New cities and homes in the country. Your woman at your side. Children playing at your feet, and overhead, fluttering in the breeze, the flag of the Federation! Charming.”

Lloyd’s delivery never fails in this film. #TSFSposting

Something that doesn’t get mentioned much:

Even though we (the audience) know why Bones is acting a little…off, Kirk wasn’t in the engine room for the katra transfer, and Scotty was unconscious. I appreciate the script not cutting corners and making Kirk suddenly omniscient.
