@jonezyboy.bsky.social
Scotsman, school librarian, prolific horror and YA book reviewer. Author of THE YA HORROR 40O non-fiction almanac. When not reading, snooker fanatic, boxing maniac and lifelong fan of very VERY loud music. Veteran of a million moshpits.
I do like to see five blokes (or were they?) dressed in scary costumes & masks thrashing the f out of their guitars. Welcome to MOLCH who I saw last night and this morning bought their album. A cheery mix of doom, sludge, black metal and noise rock.

Here's a wee taste of SMOTE from their gig at the Lexington last night. Deafening, melodic, primeval, drone heavy and proggy are only a few words which describe this unique band.

For anybody who enjoys a wee taste of drone music, here's WATER DAMAGE playing at the Cafe Oto in Hackney last night. Drone on! Repetition. Repeat. Repetition.

Many top authors have flunked in style when jumping down to kids books. Not so @paultremblay.bsky.social! I just read his Middle Grade debut TOGETHER what a deliciously creepy & atmospheric book. Loved it! Review will be in @gnofhorror.com YA section Young Blood in a couple of months. #kidslit

I love incredibly loud music but have never posted about it on BlueSky before. So here's a wee taster of PART CHIMP playing "Dirty Sun" in Hackney last night. I've seen this band about 30 times over the last 25 years. Noise rock legends of the underground music scene.

Yay! Came back from holiday to find out my YA HORROR 400 almanac had been selling copies here & there. If you're interested in YA horror, this has everything you need to get you started. The end result of 30 years as a school librarian & 10 reviewing horror.

Met one of my fav writers yesterday, the great @jconnollybooks.bsky.social! During Covid I wrote a huge feature for @gnofhorror.com ranking his Charlie Parker novels & after meeting John might get around to updating after reading the latest THE CHILDREN OF EVE. This weekend is all booked up!

Read horror! I was delighted to meet both @sjwills.bsky.social (BITE RISK) & @tess-james-mackey.bsky.social (YOU WOULDN'T CATCH ME DEAD) last night. Both feature in my own YA HORROR 400 almanac which they are holding. I have widely promoted their terrific horror fiction on @gnofhorror.com #kidlitUK

And the fantastic Middle Grade horror just keeps on coming! I loved @edenroyce.bsky.social's THE CREEPENING OF DOGWOOD HOUSE, a moving tale of family secrets, loss, hoodoo and the magical properties of hair! Not as juvenile as the cover suggests. Reviewed for @gnofhorror.com soon.

Terrific Middle Grade horror coming out of the USA at the moment. The latest I've read being JASMINE IS HAUNTED by Mark Ishiro, will be reviewed in @gnofhorror.com soon. A young girl is haunted by the death of her father and family secrets, written with a gentle queer vibe of acceptance. Loved it.

And the superb Middle Grade horror just keeps on coming! My next tip is @mrfournet.bsky.social's rather excellent DARKNESS AND THE DEMON SONG. Exorcisms in Middle Grade novels are incredibly rare, but this knocks it out of the park in style. Expect a review in @gnofhorror.com in March.

I love stumbling upon little free book exchange libraries.... this one in Dulwich, south London, even has a glass front built in to protect it from the elements! Love libraries. Books for life.

Totally adored THE CURSE OF EELGRASS BOG by @maryaverling.bsky.social. this is Middle Grade 'spooky' at its best, which is both clever and touching. Totally deserves to be in every school library, with a gentle vibe of acceptance. Expect a review in @gnofhorror.com somewhere down the line. #kidlit

Ramsey Campbell is 1 of the greatest living horror writers, who in 2024 celebrated an amazing 60 years since 1st published. This cool photo is of the Campbell collection owned by the brilliant UK writer Adam Nevill. Adam is the finest horror writer of his generation who has learned from the master!

Here's some of Gabino Iglesias's top horror tips from 2024 as published in the New York Times Book Review. This dude really knows his onions.

In Sweden for Christmas. Have crap footwear and even worse language skills, but my kindle is FULLY loaded.

Here's my book Christmas tree in the school library. My own YA HORROR 400 almanac is the replacement fairy on top! Been built in a little alcove to limit the changes of a stray schoolbag demolishing it.

Isn't this book absolutely beautiful? Alexander Zelenyj is an absolute master of weird short stories & I recently reviewed BEWARE US FLOWERS OF THE ANNIHILATOR for @horrordna.bsky.social scoring the max 5/5. Few blend horror, SF, fantasy with unnerving & compassionate stories better than Alex.

It's about time Ransom Riggs did something that wasn't about Peculiar Children, so just about to dive into his new fantasy novel, THE EXTRAORDINARY DISAPPOINTMENTS OF LEOPOLD BERRY whilst the snooker spins in the background.

I love it when horror authors we hype on the YA section of @gnofhorror.com spread their literary magic far & wide! @sjwills.bsky.social zooms in for a Q&A on werewolves and her BITE RISK, soon to be trilogy, in my school library just before the Chrimbo holidays.

How cool is this freaky dude? Spotted on a walk along a disused train line path near Finsbury Park, North London.

Finally got around to reading RF Kuang's YELLOWFACE. Started it on Saturday & finished in on Sunday. So top 5/5 rec. One of the best books about the book world and publishing I've read in ages. With a delicious unreliable narrator, seriously cringy scenes & clever use if social media. Top stuff.

Imminent rerelease of a 1980 vampire "classic" which intrigued me mainly because I had never heard of it before.

I've reviewed YA and Middle Grade horror for many years. Krystal Sutherland's THE INVOCATIONS is one of my very top picks for 2024. A terrific balance of gore, loss, supernatural horror, romance and witchcraft. Loved this one.
