Wow - that has triggered some *memories*! Haven’t heard it in nearly 40 years, a lifetime ago. Thank you. Who’d have thought that the Sisters’ cover of Jolene works be my madeleine?!

So. Firstly, I was absolutely bowled over by Spent Light. It's wonderful. Secondly, I was directing this ☝️to one of the hosts of Athletico Mince, a podcast in which a (fictitious) version of Sting regularly appears. Lastly, these are two threads of my cultural life that I never expected to cross.

I remember a piece on local Edinburgh news about a guy who’d given up something like 50 years earlier - it was a really long time. They interviewed him & asked if he missed it at all - he said “only after meals“.

I love this record. As the notes say, it’s without irony - he just genuinely loved these tunes, and that comes across. Just joyous.
