Today in Black History: On Apr. 16, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote an open letter, known as his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," to offer a defense of the civil rights protests. It was addressed to 8 white pastors who criticized the protests in a statement published in the Birmingham News.
