The City of #Ghent stands firm against authoritarianism, wherever it comes from.

Florida may have put us on a blacklist for refusing to work with companies profiting from occupation and apartheid.

We’ll wear that as a badge of honor.

Almost half of all environmental claims made by online traders are exaggerated, false or deceptive.

When lying is allowed, honest entrepreneurs are punished.

Disappointing

Silent Spring (1962) was the first book to expose how industries poison nature on a global scale. Before that global pollution wasn't a concern. “Sustainability” wasn’t a concept until 1987.

Trump, born in 1946, and many global leaders grew up when endless growth seemed normal.

First, they came for the immigrants,

Then they came for the pro-Palestinian activists,

Then they came for the journalists, judges, lawyers, teachers, LGBTQ+, federal employees, opposition party members, unions...

They will come for you,
and there will not be anyone left
to speak out for you.

1/ Unreal. Shocking.

The images from Palestine are beyond comprehension. People there are deprived of water and food, denied humanitarian aid, and international law flouted. Children and adults are being murdered, maimed and traumatized.

Now @theguardian.com. When the 'Europe section' features a foreign billionaire, Musk, and Trump as most important news items, it highlights how external wealth and power are overshadowing regional issues and sovereignty. Europe must protect its democracy.

Racist attacks on Hafsa El-Bazioui show how hate spreads under the guise of 'cultural defense.' From harassment of politicians to online abuse, the alt-right thrives on fear and division. This is why I'll never align with such a movement. We must reject hate in all forms.

1/ The global thirst for #cobalt, essential for EVs, laptops and smartphones, fuels #extractivism. Mined largely in the DRC under exploitative conditions, cobalt extraction devastates communities and ecosystems while powering high consumption in high income countries.

Discussing the #Ghent strategy on #Fairtrade, a.o.

*active involvement of, and transparency towards, non-profit partners
*holistic approach, not only sustainable public procurement (!), with a diverse set of partners
*expect the same standards from all (!) entities delivering goods or services

Let's check interactiveness on Bluesky

Tomorrow we'll be discussing how we and NGOs can work on a #JustTransition in a turbulent world.

We'll talk with the CEO's of Oxfam, Fairtrade Belgium and Amnesty.

Any questions you would ask this panel of prominent speakers?

#Coffee prices hit a 47-year high, but farmers still see little of the profit. The value piles up downstream, leaving producers struggling with rising costs and low returns.

This leads to the continuation of unsustainable farming methods, #deforestation and a #RuraleExodus.

This is The Netherlands in the year 2024.

The fighters for freedom, it turns out, mainly like to stick their nose into private matters. Now 'Dutchmen with a migration background', tomorrow you. It was like that, it is like that, but it doesn't have to be like that.

Pretty scary, this.

Yet another #BlackFriday... Many of the items bought impulsively will be discarded unused or barely used, fueling #WasteColonialism, burdening the Global South with our trash. Buy only that what you need.

The global #textile industry has serious environmental, social, and health impacts. Chemicals and #microplastics from production and waste pollute ecosystems and harm human health.

Ghent is trying to tackle these issues by purchasing sustainable workwear 👇
