A view out across the sea from a stepped dark grey concrete seafront. Below the concrete at the edge of the water can be seen rough dark stones and some red-brown sand that extends into the grey-brown sea. The sky is almost uniformly grey cloud, but is brown slightly at the horizon with glimpses of light blue sky. A dark landmass can be seen at the horizon. Not an island, in this case, but the land on the other side of a wide firth.

Sideways is also good, but these wireless charging pads are a pain cos the table surface is so slippery that my phone never stays there

Here's the kids' work from today's illuminated mushroom-making workshop; this was a class of year 6 pupils
The back of a school classroom. Two large flat pieces of cardboard have been laid across two school desks. On the cardboard are 23 illuminated paper mushrooms. Each has been made and coloured in by a different pupil. As an example, the nearest two in the centre have a yellow stalk and a cap with big red spots, and a purple stalk and a cap that has been coloured with a rainbow pattern and white spots. A close-up view of a few of the mushrooms, taken from just above the surface of the cardboard. The nearest mushroom "towers" over the view like a tree. The stalk of the mushroom in the centre of the frame has been gently shaded in orange, pink and blue pencil, and then has an "uwu"-like cute face drawn on it in solid black felt pen. The shaded windows of the classroom can be seen in the distance.

I am experimenting with making paper, illuminated mushrooms for a primary school workshop tomorrow
A white, paper mushroom shape made up of a column cut into strips at the top that are stuck to the underside of a circle of paper that is folded multiple times from the centre to create a slight umbrella shape. The whole thing stands on a piece of brown cardboard through which a small torch has been stuck (you can't see it). The white paper glows from the light of the torch, with the fringe of the mushroom cap darker than the centre. You can dimly see the worktable and studio bits behind. Same mushroom as in the previous picture, but the cap is inverted so that the edges point up. The picture is taken from a little lower down showing how the stalk of the mushroom feathers out to join with the cap. Little bright spots glow in the gaps between the cut strips.

For completeness, this is what my feathered-serpent headdress looked like in the end
A front-on view of the green snake head, with feathers jabbed into the back in a fan arrangement somewhat reminiscent of a lion's mane. The head sits on a window ledge above an old cast iron radiator. A garden and a tree can just be seen outside the window. The feathers start a mix of green and blue at the fluffy end near the head, but then graduate out to black at the tips. Me wearing the snake hat from the previous picture. The long white fangs poke down in front of my glasses. As usual, I am sporting a messy grey beard and a, fairly plain black top. I am looking away from the camera at something else and a close inspection reveals that I'm wearing some kind of shiny metallic green eye make-up. I'm also sporting a necklace made with the help of a kids' bead set and some painted, cut-out cardboard in the shape of slice through a conch shell – which is the appropriate jewellery for Quetzalcoatl to be wearing, apparently.

The snake hat sits on an empty cable drum on the workbench. The scales have been painted green, with black in the gaps, eyes and nostrils. Some light black spray paint has been used to add texture to the green. A pair of long, sharp white teeth protrude down from the front. In the eye facing the viewer can be seen a white, painted highlight. The whole surface has been given a spray with clear lacquer to give it a bit of shine.

Phase 2 complete! Next up is painting…
The previous cardboard snake head has now been covered in large cardboard scales that meet with thin gaps between them to create a pattern of lines over the surface The scales wrap around the edges softening the original boxy look. Gaps have been left where the eyes and nostrils are. As before, the head lies on the workbench. Next to it is piles of little cardboard scraps, a box knife and a pencil.

Outline structure of the snake hat is complete, at least!
A cardboard snake head, about 40cm long, sits on the workbench in the studio. Eyes and nostrils are drawn roughly in with pencil. A heavy-duty hot-glue gun stands beside it with the red power light glowing ominously. Just behind that can be spied a sharp knife and a measuring tape. Bits of cardboard litter the tabletop.

Marginally neater and daisy-chained together so I can power them all up with one cable

I recognise that some might be critical of my laissez-faire attitude towards thermal management…
All of the cabling and PCB-containing boxes from the last post, but now jammed into a 64 litre clear plastic storage tub. A cable dangles out of the box and disappears off somewhere into the distance. There are pink lights visible through the tub. The whole thing looks somehow… unwise.

A tangled mass of black cables lie in a heap on the floor connected to multiple ABS boxes containing PCBs. The boxes are half buried within the mess and half piled on top. There are about half a dozen boxes clearly visible, but I can tell you that there's another 15 hidden somewhere underneath. There's also about 120m of cable. One of the trestles of the workbench is visible behind the chaos, along with the edge of the worktop and a stack of boxes under the table. There's also a small black office wheely-chair that has been stolen from the library's study room, and you'll be delighted to see the return of the blue bin.

This is not *exactly* what I was supposed to be working on today, but sometimes you have to cut yourself some slack

Also, it turns out that 6mm white heatshrink makes quite a nice diffuser for softening high-brightness 5mm white LEDs
Twenty glowing, red, heart-shaped, rubbery plastic lights on a string of clear-coated wire, lying in a jumbled pile on a grubby MDF bench top. Each of the lights has a short section of white heatshrink sticking out of it. A single heart light in close-up. The LED glows in the centre creating a yellow/white spot. The thick, flat, red plastic heart glows around this, particularly at the edges. The white heatshrink encases the two wires that enter the heart and then disappears inside. A single LED on the chain, extracted from its heart surround is held in my hand. A few of the red lights are behind. I've turned the exposure way down so you can see the shape of the light clearly. The white heatshrink extends down and over the LED turning it from a harsh point into a nice soft glowing bulb.

This is the second time in their life that I’ve remade these heart fairy lights. I love them too much to throw them away ❤️

Last time I swapped the bulbs for LEDs and kept the original 24V AC transformer. This time I’m swapping to 5V DC so I can use an old USB wart
My workbench in the studio with a length of illuminated red, heart-shaped fairy lights. A few more of the plastic hearts are in a little pile. Some resistors and white LEDs are scattered on the bench and behind are some tools, a soldering iron and a bench power supply. My laptop is peeking out in the corner.

A mass of white plastic long triangles and small diamonds leans up against one of the shelving units in the studio. The pile is arranged into bunches of similar pieces of different size, with the larger pieces in the back and smaller ones heaped in front. Stacked against each other, the arrangement has a pleasing, snowy-mountain-range sort of vibe going on. Also, the sun through a window sharply picks out one corner of the pile. The usually ugly studio carpet looks almost sea-like. A close-up view of the, now pretty trashed trestle tabletop. It's once, mostly pristine white surface is scored by hundreds of cutting marks that expose the brown MDF below. The marks are mostly horizontal –  parallel to the long edge of the table – but a few are diagonal across these and the result forms a sort of scratchy, half-visible capital A.

Ran a workshop on Wednesday at a nearby residential care home making Ojo de Dios using wool scraps and leftover bits of willow – great fun and really lovely results from a simple and meditative process

A fake wood circular table top has 9 different woven ornaments lying on it. Each is structured around crossed sticks wound with wool. The shapes are mostly diamonds using a pair of crossed sticks and wrapped in two different colours of wool. One uses three sticks to make a hexagonal shape. The wool is a mix of white, orange, yellow, purples, blues and pinks. A few of the Ojo de Dios also have a wool tassel on one corner.
