This is interesting. Just this week at the @seattleindies.bsky.social founders club event, Crowdfunding was mostly dismissed as difficult, time consuming, and not viable today compared to ten years ago

Hey creature lovers (especially you #avatarsky): creature design master, and one of the creators of the #avatar Banshee, Neville Page is doing a Kickstarter book. It'd be really cool if we could support this (even if it just meant sharing on your social media). nevillepagekickstarter.com

“Can glue taste as yummy as it looks? Does it deserve a place in my lunch?” A 5-year old asks. “Many kindergarten teachers would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

This weekend I started @pikuma.com’s Atari 2600 | 6502 Assembly course and it’s been an absolute joy.

There is magic in this machine. I can see how many great programmers from previous generations were able to fall in love with computing.

My wife got me on Pinterest to help us decorate our home, and most of what I see is a giant pile of unrealistic generative AI slop.

Pretty disappointing for an app that is supposed to cater to creatives. How is it even useful for most people?

Seeing this group of college kids who are being directed by Musk as part of the DOGE calamity reminded me of @bcantrill.bsky.social ‘s excellent Monktoberfest talk on the valley’s unhealthy obsession with young technologists.

Worth revisiting today.

Here’s “Algorithm Design Manual”, by Steven Skiena.

This one is usually in the pantheon of “Intro to CS’s Greatest Hits”, and rightfully so. A highlight for me is the set of chapters on graphs. “Graphs are one of the unifying themes of computer science”.

First up is “Game Engine Black Book DOOM” by @fabinou.bsky.social

Apart from the excellent breakdown of the source code and development of DOOM, Fabien provides context on the PC hardware that was available at the time and the constraints it created, making DOOM’s creation even more fascinating.
