South Wales this morning. More rain ahead. We're nowhere near building landscape resilience to meet the new-normal, let alone what's coming.

Enjoyed this quote from the Residential Freehold Association objecting to measures to clamp down on the scam of ground rents.

Effective translation: "regulation would be an outrageous incursion on our right to get paid for doing literally nothing"

Lots of dumb stuff in Britain but this is right up there.

Buy a train ticket from the official website: £212

Buy train ticket from a random third party website for literally the same journey: £65.05

A £147 mark up just... because?

Well, when you put it like that 🤔

The significance of those irksome environmental protections...

Striking that, when you look at the trends on species abundance in the UK (below is from Wales), one of the few conservation success stories is bats.

So naturally they're front and center of current government attacks on environmental regulation. Let's make sure we just fail everywhere I guess...

Shot, chaser.

I'm so tired.

I don't know what's more insane: this story that the ex leader of the Welsh Reform Party has plead guilty to being bribed by the Russians to regurgitate their talking points in the European parliament, or that the UK Labour party have... barely mentioned it? And instead are churning out utter dross?

I'll be speaking at the @libdems.org.uk conference this weekend on behalf of @righttoroam.bsky.social.

'Roam, Rewilding, Restore'

Saturday, 1pm.

It's outside the secure zone so don't need a conference ticket to attend.

See some of you there?

Russell Brand now conducting supportive interviews with Tommy Robinson.

Truly, one of history's most breathtaking charlatans.

When I was a student some stuffy old writers were petitioning to make the British Library an even more exclusive place.

I love that @britishlibrary.bsky.social not only said 'stuff that' but went completely the other way. Kids play areas. College students doing their homework. A truly public space.

As it happens I met this fella a couple of weeks ago. He was doing voluntary work to make habitat for bees and butterflies.

There's space for people and for nature. Where we build and *how* we build is the more important question, as well as using the land we have in more rational ways.
July 7, 2025 at 12:01 PM
The reality is that residential housing represents a tiny proportion of land use in the UK. Even in England it's only around 5%.

Whereas land in the hatched yellow, like that ploughed field, covers around a third of the UK. Some is necessary for food production, a lot is utilised irrationally.

Equally partial / anecdotal but I've seen it working without issue (to my knowledge, I'm obv not there all the time) in the reserves in my ends.

E.g. this from Newport Wetlands. I'm guessing but think there's a few simple psychological cues which make it effective.

Bad news: Ash is one of our best native 'sweet-spot' trees for both biodiversity benefits and short-medium term carbon sequestration.

Good news: it sounds like Elm could be on the verge of a recovery?

On the plus side, the money raised to support the DNPA's legal fees in the event of a loss will now be going towards some great projects
