Forgive the pedantry, but it's 5.56, for 5.56 millimeters. Gun calibers get confusing because some are metric, and some use... more antiquated forms of measurement, so the decimal can appear in all sorts of places.
...I haven't even touched on how the measurements aren't always entirely accurate.
