Associate Prof. in Film Studies & IRC Laureate, Trinity College Dublin. Digital theory, screen voices, sound, immersive tech and synthetic media. And cats.
Visited Brian Maguire's La Grande Illusion at the Hugh Lane Gallery today and hard not to extend its commentary on the visual language of war to the atrocities in Gaza, and beyond. Also, expert level curation with this work mirrored in the flawed flooring.

Great to see the TOC for The Screens of Virtual Production (eds Sian Mitchell, Colin Perry, Sean Redmond & Lienors Torre).

18(!) chapters, covering VP from a whole host of angles, mine provides a genealogy for it by way of rear projection & other compositing tech. www.routledge.com/The-Screens-...

We highlight potential benefits to these filters, including their ability to playfully shield the user’s face from a critical gaze, to question gendered beauty norms, and to offer nonbinary users liminal media spaces through which to explore self-image.

We theorize facial AR filters in relation to feminist and queer methodologies, as well as screen theories of “seamfulness” and “mechanic sutures” (Wegenstein 2012). Case studies range from the viral Bold Glamour makeup filter to custom filters by musicians Björk & Ariana Grande.

Stefania Marghitu & I have a new article out: “Seamful Sutures: Gender Exploration and Identity Expression Using Augmented Reality Facial Filters,” in an issue of Global Storytelling on the social mediascape, feminism & misogyny.

Again we have the cultural capital of familiar media voices deployed to amplify a woman’s political voice, with a strong supporting role from cats: the #pussygrabsback hashtag and image is replaced with all forms of cat ladies for Kamala merch and memes.

The Harris 'Brat' branding is replaying a lot of the playful online discourse from 2016's Trump & Hillary Clinton's campaign, which I looked at in a 2018 Velvet Light Trap article on 'Meme Girls versus Trump' (linked below).

Ending classes for the year on a high, with a very thoughtful gift & note from a visiting Erasmus student: "Words from the surrealist Cocteau for a surreal winter." A week after the Dublin riots, another small reminder of how fortunate we are to have diversity in our local and academic communities.

Looking forward to sharing some recent research at SCARF at the Trinity Long Room Hub next Monday at 10. The talk will look at the female face as a tech design experiment by historicising augmented beauty filters via analog filtration effects from classical Hollywood. All welcome.

It almost comes across like a memento mori or threat to the rest of the cast: who will be the next to pass? It reminded me of the untimely Glee cast deaths and, sure enough, the NY Post posted this greyed out image of the deceased members in 2020.

Unnerving to see this kind of photo editing in the context of someone's death. A technique most familiar perhaps from reality TV line-ups were contestants are faded out when they leave the show. Digital mourning scholars have lots of content with poor Matthew Perry and his cryptic final posts.

"Eisenstein had just such a voice: listening to him, it was as though a flame with fibers protruding from it was advancing right toward me."

Researching vocal synesthesia and came across this delightful description of the voice of everyone's (2nd) favourite Soviet filmmaker.

And the colours continued at Dublin Veg Fest, where vegan food demonstrations and talks were interspersed with generous samples. The seaweed pesto and smoked paprika fermented cashew cream cheese had to come home.
