Not the first time there's been a tussle over staff. Lotfi faced an censure back in 2024 from Imes after tensions broke in a meeting that involved a former village administrator's confederate tattoo. The censure was rejected after citizens spoke in support of Lotfi.

Any idea what's next? If all staff left, what are the options?
December 17, 2025 at 1:11 PM
In a world where everyone is acting in good faith I think I can see the merits of the concerns. But every issue is magnified beyond belief because it's zero parking and skinny and the neighbors don't want that. I would love to see how you get to 10% food delivery on any given night.

I don't necessarily agree, but Madison's lack of building more has knock-on effects for everyone else.

Also, building more and getting people to pay taxes in Madison instead of moving to a surrounding city (whoops) would help too

I'm glad we have passed the threshold of opposing 66 units in the central area.

I know some co-workers who talk about Mount Horeb being the last bastion for finding a house to purchase and that the window is rapidly closing.

And it would be nice for the City/State to rein in those covenants. I think Houston has automatic expiration every decade unless you go through the rigamarole to extend them. 40 years is too long.
October 7, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Is this the first rumblings of private covenants to get around housing reform?

Noahopinion recently discussed the Houston method to no zoning where neighborhoods can opt out via covenants. If this grows, I'd like to see the City be more aggressive because you "can always opt out"

I wonder if more creators lowers prices or starts new models. If people only want to spend $Y a month, how do you ensure you get a part of that share? Do you lower prices to keep consistent subscribers or have a "one-time" fee with the expectation that readers go through your backlog and then unsub?

I appreciate The Argument bringing together a bunch of writers I like reading and putting them all in one place. That's my problem with "newspaper" vs. Substack. I like specific people at the newspaper, but not the whole organization's outlook/clickbait

And yet we can't build more housing in the places where people do want to live, because it would disrupt the neighborhood character/people would yell. A real heads I win, tails you lose situation.

Need to prep a vote-a-rama for 2028 amendments to the GFLU

"That is a political decision, not a staff decision" - I recall for my amendment to make all the LR zones near Vilas/Dudgeon-Monroe LMR in 2023. Sounds like Alders need to express preferences while they are preparing their recommendations

Especially when there's a B route BRT station down the street AND the company discussed how they do allow WFH for any employee that wants it.

Interesting he supports duplexes and flag lots. Would have thought he'd support the density downtown and have more issues with duplexes.

"Ald. Bill Tishler says he supports that the proposals simplify the rules for duplex development and “deep lot” subdivisions"

And this was eye opening as well:
"approximately 32,000 more properties in the City of Madison would be allowed up to two attached homes. If even just 5% of those eligible property owners took the opportunity to add a second home, that would equate to 1,500 newly available homes."

The site explaining all the changes is awesome. I loved the graphic showing what's currently allowed for duplexes (orange) vs. what this would expand to (yellow)

Similar to allowing everyone who commutes from outside Madison for work to live in Madison (if they wanted). If you build the infill housing, the property taxes they pay go back to Madison instead of Fitchburg, Middleton, Sauk City, Janesville, etc for the city to use
