It’s weird to live in a time when basic principles like cruelty is wrong, cheating is empty & the idea that curiosity, generosity, originality, the satisfaction of earned accomplishments & loving intimacy are the center of a good life feel like countercultural concepts

If Congress had a constitutional spine, Donald Trump would face strong charges of impeachable abuses of power. As matters stand today, that check on executive power has been temporarily rendered impotent.

Threatening friends and neighbors like Canada and Denmark is not the way to get along and do well in the world. Without their good will, the world will be a much more inhospitable place.

Tariffs are counterproductive. When the Great Depression hit, countries responded by raising high tariffs against each other, expecting them to protect their own industries against foreign competition. Instead, they sunk the whole world economy and made the depression far longer and harsher.

Withdrawal from the WHO and the climate agreements undercuts the cooperation needed to catch problems early. Yes, covid was botched, but we have been spared a whole lot of epidemics. Enjoy ebola and bird flu. Watch the ocean swallow the Jersey shore and much of Florida sooner rather than later.

The pardon of the Jan 6 fools including the most violent ones bodes ill: governance will be closer to that of Haiti and Syria than to what the Founders tried to set up.

I had hoped that what Trump said was mere bluster, and what was said about him was mere Democratic fearmongering. But watching the first 24 hours of this administration is like drawing the 10 of swords in a tarot reading. Yes it is that bad.
