1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

This year one of the great joys of my work has been contributing to the advisory board for a new exhibition at the Imperial War Museum. And last week the exhibition officially opened!

We are 6th form teachers striking for Sixth Form Pay and conditions. Our CEO on £200,000 +bonuses wants to pay teachers FE rates not 6th form rates. She would rather employ a legal firm at £1.8 million than pay wage rise owed to us from last year. Save our 6th form!

Have spent this morning reading @johnsiblon25.bsky.social's wonderful thesis: 'War memory and the construction of hierarchy: representations of African and Caribbean colonial service personnel in the aftermath of the FWW'. It's fascinating and opens for interesting comparisons with other empires.

Very moving to hear the testimonies of 14th army veterans on the BBC VJ Day 80 programme. #VJDay #VJ80 I do wish there were military units from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, & East and West Africa, as well as Gurkhas and British forces, present as part of the commemoration. All should be remembered.

In 1940, after surrender of French forces, white soldiers were made POWs but 200 Senegalese infantrymen were massacred. The local population secretly buried their bodies in a mass grave before reinterment in an African style ‘tata’ in Chasselay. It was vandalised this year but is now restored.

@batw.bsky.social Thanks for the opportunity to give a paper at #batw2025 on the imperial dimension to WW1 commemoration with Louise Rodwell, Francis Van Berkel and Sarah Fissmer. Used my time in Liverpool to seek out one of Britain’s first memorials to black service personnel in Faulkner Square.

Just bonkers. Pro-Israel groups taunting pro-Palestine protesters by singing Stevie Wonder to the tune of “Happy Birthday to us!”
