This was a song for the people who had no way to dodge the draft. Young men who cold go to college, did so for the student deferment. Young men who had no student deferment expected to get drafted, and so many of them did.

I had friends who fought in Vietnam. None said the U.S. effort was well organized or sensible. You'd fight and take a hill, then later that day give the hill back to the enemy, and a few of your buddies would have died in the process.
That war invited protest songs.
