I’m a Welsh German… or maybe a German Welshman. I write books. I sometimes win prizes for writing books. I bake. I knit. I’ve been married to my husband for 18 years - we’ve been together 38! Cymro oddi cartref.
39 years… from Liverpool via North Wales to Germany. Quite an adventure…

So, today I made some mincemeat- can’t buy it here in Deutschland unless I pay a silly price in the ‘British Shelf’. And I baked a rich fruit cake which will double up as a Christmas Cake.

Danke Frau Dr von der Leyen.
I call on the Hungarian authorities to allow the Budapest Pride to go ahead.

Without fear of any criminal or administrative sanctions against the organisers or participants.

To the LGBTIQ+ community in Hungary and beyond:

I will always be your ally.

I follow @auschwitzmemorial.bsky.social and every day I look into the eyes of people from across Europe that the Nazi regime humiliated, tortured and murdered! It’s ironic that often, between the Auschwitz posts I see the faces of Trump, Vance, Hegseth re-posted telling modern day tales of fascism.

Post you from a different era… 1984… just returned to the UK after three years in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nel loved chasing squirrels - until one bit her on her nose! She was a feisty dog… very affectionate, but only on her terms… stroke her uninvited and she’d growl her dissatisfaction… but she never snapped at anyone… she was 13 when she died.

Dankeschön Annette Dittert.
Why it is time to say goodbye to Germany as an oasis of stability, and why ironically it was JD Vance in Munich who might have helped the centrist parties to get a grip now after all.
My take on the most important elections in a generation on Sunday in Berlin. 👇👇
The far right rising
Ahead of a historic German election, the AfD is courting the global right – and threatening to upend European politics.
