Interesting! I use Dict.cc as my go-to online DE/EN dictionary, in part because of all the community feedback and idiomatic examples given. The lack of symmetry between different languages and, alas, the lingua franca of EN is, I suspect, generally a real problem for LLM models in other languages.

I tested Google Translate out with the languages where I can truly judge, viz. German, French, and Italian. It was ... really bad! And I think this happened recently.

I try not to avail myself of this too much but the Firefox browser has a good translation function still if need be (I think).

3/3: It's this new sensation of headlong lunges at an anticipated meaning evidently triggered by a word or words at the start of a clause that leads me to think new (?) LLM models are being brought into play. Strange to think of Google Translate as an early LLM but that's what it was. Now ...? 🤢

2/3: Now--even apart from the inability to see how *often* a phrasing appears with Google using quotation marks--Google Translate also seems ... increasingly terrible. By this I mean flatly incorrect word-to-word translations, wrong syntax, unwarranted lunges at idiomatic phrasings, &c.
