This is too exciting! So exciting in fact that I dusted off my YouTube channel to record a trailer reaction.

Just like I’d recommend that everyone watches Twin Peaks or reads 1984, playing Disco Elysium will give a referential foundation. Even if you won’t end up loving it you’ll experience something truly original. Years from now you’ll see references to it in games made by those who were inspired by it.

When I finished the game one of the first things I thought was: I’ll never play a game like this again. And I’m sure the same thought would strike me even if I didn’t like the game as much as I did.

Like I mentioned the game mechanic is dialogue. And the story of who Harry is revolves around one of the most entertaining who-done-it stories I’ve experienced. In other words, a low barrier of entry to a popular genre. But that’s why I’d recommend it to anyone. Not why I’d recommend it to EVERYONE?

Everything I’ve written so far makes this game seem like a very niche experience. Something for the Role Playing Game Connoisseurs. So what makes me say I’d recommend Disco Elysium to everyone?

In other words, unlike other RPGs, the entire game is one big character creator. And who Harry has become by the end of it, is the payoff. The thing that all the hours you’ve put into the game amounts to.

Amnesia might seem like a played out narrative tool but in Disco Elysium it’s used to create something special. By interacting with the world, the people in it and the different parts of your mind you get to both rediscover and reinvent who Harry is.

Unlike most RPGs it doesn’t start with a character creator aside from picking stats. You don’t pick a background, class, or what your character looks like. You’re handed a character who’ll most likely be very far from you or the character you’d normally play. He’s not very likeable. But who is he?

It’s rare that I play a game that I feel like I could recommend to everyone. And at first glance Disco Elysium doesn’t come across as that kind of game. It’s a game all about narrative where pretty much the only game mechanic is dialogue.
