Nothing useful to contribute, mainly just snarky comments from the sidelines.
And yet you can be damned sure that the "immigration is spiralling out of control, something urgently needs to be done" narrative will continue unabated.

How lovely that 'kindness' should be the auto-correct error! A word you clearly use a lot.

If you stand up to bullies, they don't attack you. If you show weakness, they do. You'd think that was a simple enough lesson for the BBC to learn.

That's three whole paragraphs to read, though.

Hadn't come across this before. It's great, makes Facebook palatable again!

It is a tree I feel you could converse with. (I don't, because, well...).

There have been rumours of crimes being committed in East London. Ronnie and Reggie Kray have been appointed to carry out an investigation.

There are few trees as majestic as an ancient parkland oak. I know this one well.

It's a joke. The right wing and their press in this country (Mail, Express, Telegraph) go from one seasonal confected outrage to another. "They've cancelled Easter!", "He's not wearing a poppy!", "You're not allowed to say Christmas any more!".

It is the crass stupidity of it which astounds me. They are just increasing the salience of issues where they will always lose out to the genuine far right. And even if they go far right themselves, existing far right voters won't vote for them, preferring the 'real thing'. 2

What sends me into a gibbering rage about this is that they are doing a whole load of things which they almost certainly don't believe in in order to win votes, when its effect is the direct opposite, causing them to haemorrhage votes from their natural base with no chance of winning Reform votes. 1

None of those trees are wearing poppies! It's a bloody outrage!
November 20, 2025 at 5:45 PM
The main difference for me is that they are doing cruel and hateful things which they don't really want to do in order to win votes, whereas the Conservatives did really want to do them. Doesn't make any difference on the ground.

They only had to be different from the outgoing Tories.

I would say it's actually McSweeney. Yes, I know he doesn't have the title as such, but still.

And all because of a calamitous series of entirely unforced errors.

Indeed.

So we should say 'fall', also an older form, instead of that neologism 'autumn'?

I have to confess my objections are not to do with a fear of possible ambiguity but from concerns about the creeping dominance of American language and, with it, American culture here in the UK. An unwinnable battle, I know.

Given that he's pardoned all the people who took part in the violent assault on the Capitol and praised them as 'great patriots', it's hard to see what he's hurt about.
