And of course the hand sharpening of charcoal pencil with exacto blades is often what I do. Sometimes it seems they’re the only thing that works.

I find that with many of the softer pencils with charcoal, a hand sharpener is totally required. The hand sharpener can be turned slowly so it doesn’t break the softer leads.

But electric is nice for regular pencils.
