Different boards and even sections of the same board can have different tannin concentrations. Here is the fully stained piece. It has almost a chalkiness to it.

Dribbling some of the rust-vinegar concoction on an offcut shows how different the effect is on white oak versus pine

Semi gloss Polycrylic topcoat and it's finished.

Fully dried and presume it finished reacting overnight and the color has evened out. Light sanding and topcoats on the agenda this morning.

Back to experiments with chemical staining. Iron acetate on ... Pine? Mixed white softwoods anyhow. Its coming out very interestingly.

Got some pipe kits from Penn State Industries and turned a few for gifts. Clockwise from bottom left, the woods are: mulberry, sugar maple, lilac, black walnut, and rowan (American mountain ash).

Trying a Kona gel stain by Varathane that i picked up at the reuse center. This is the first pass of color. Haven't made up my mind where it goes from here.

To fix my trailer with a new wheel hub, I needed a 7/8" castle nut with 18 tpi threads. Which I could not find. I did eventually find an eBay seller offering a regular nut of that size/threading. And then I milled it into what I needed.
