Trump has decided to ignore public opinion, betting that it can ultimately be subjugated somehow through intimidation or arms. It's extremely dangerous but also probably/hopefully a fatal error.

At least SCOTUS motivation, and path to reform, are clear. Not clear why NYT, which vainly but also kind-of accurately sees itself as documenting history, has bet on a version of the Trump era as "normal, not-extraordinary history"
