A fun (by fun I mean vomit inducing) exercise is what exactly is the business case for retaining Cherington? Like what is that pitch he gives to Nutting? I lost Jones, my two best hitters decided to have awful seasons, Pham was awful before showing his true ability, I offloaded big $ in Hayes…?

I think when you say you kept the guys on expiring deals to help the clubhouse and then bring up their replacements (and presumably dfa them) you confirm or expose the lie. He will wait for September and the expanded rosters

List is spot on, ty. My fervent hope is someone is (last) in the room with nutting saying that we don’t have to do anything at the trade deadline (with those under contract) that couldn’t be done over winter and that those dollars will reduce payroll so low as to invite further scrutiny/demagoguery

I know the two things don’t line up exactly, but I have this fear of Keller and Hayes being bundled together in a Liriano style salary dump that also sends out some low level talent for a quad a middle infielder type and a reliever. Illogical given their value…but…is it?

I suspect future competitiveness is less relevant than getting payroll aligned to income. As such I would expect a shedding of most salary commitments beyond this season.
I’d be more concerned with whether $ trumps the player return in such a trade.

I don’t think he would, but these articles and chatter will have the same result. Is it more likely Nutting approves a trade while BC is a lame duck, where he can foist responsibility on his outgoing carcass or more likely a new gm/president in year 3/4?
