Oh I trust Gilligan. I can enjoy the show without liking Carol, but every week I find myself shouting, "she did WHAT???" lol

like... why wouldn't you give credit to your own party for the work they did curbing the asylum loophole? Why would you give credit to a guy who hasn't done any of the real work at all?

When you "bend" to an authoritarian they interpret that as a sign of weakness. It would have been much better to stand in stark opposition immediately and escalate until the authoritarian concedes. Authoritarians only respect shows of strength.

There are some very revealing interviews of Germans in the 50s talking about the good times of the 30s.

Don't forget that most Germans didn't know they were in a fascist state either. What they saw was a state that was functional again. It's starting to sound like if you're not being attacked directly then it must mean that it does not exist.
