Dating back to 1470, and now incorporated into the Scottish Storytelling Centre, John Knox House is one of Scotland's greatest cultural treasures and is associated with the most dramatic events in Scotland's turbulent history.
Due to maintenance, John Knox House will be closed 2nd February to 14th February 2026. During this time, there will be no access to the museum, but the Scottish Storytelling centre and Haggis Box Café shall remain open. We apologise for the inconvenience.

No matter what century someone has looked out of one of our windows, the view of the Royal Mile at sunset will always be amazing. #edinburgh #royalmile #sunset #history #edinburghhistory #scotland #historicbuilsing #johnknoxhouse

Having been on the Royal Mile since 1470 and a museum since 1853, we have accumulated a lot of things. Here is a guidebook from 1991, after we reopened following restorations. Since we have been open as a museum for over 175 years, our own museum keepsakes become historical items themselves.

We have just launched our new Kids' Guide for John Knox House. Ranging from 5-7 years and 8-11 years, they have games and hunts to make the history of our iconic building fun for all.

We're excited to share with you a new exhibition we have showing some of the artifacts celebrating the life of John Knox house since it opened as a museum in the 1850's. The very first guest book dating back to 1850, and the collection of postcards (The Knox Series) from around 100 years ago.

We recently obtained postcards picturing the inside John Knox House from over 100 years ago. Known as the Knox Series by William Hay- curator of John Knox house for around 40 years from 1903. He had a book shop in the same spot we have a book shop. We hope to display the postcards soon.
