Also, the bike lanes along Donald are not protected and vehicles travel at excessive speeds along the corridor and vehicles are able to block the lane. Separated lanes (like the ones pictured in Montreal) are needed along this stretch to ensure everyone is comfortable biking along the corridor.

The bike lanes in three separate spots along Donald abruptly end forcing anyone riding a bike to re-enter traffic at intersections. The city planned to connect the bike lanes but did not have money in the project budget. Austerity budgets negatively impact people’s lives.

Notable positives from the proposal are the elimination of the slip lane (pictured below), and connections to Columbus Ave. and Grant Toole Way via a bi-directional separated bike lane on the east side of the intersection.

This week the city held its public information session for the protected intersection at Donald St. and the Vanier Parkway.
The proposed plans are a step in the right direction; however, there’s still work to be done to improve the cycling corridor to make it usable for all.
