Yes, while there may be an element of overcompensation on Gardiner's part, data shows that we need to make the CTA be and feel safer. Here are some public safety strategies included in Illinois' new transit reform/funding bill that passed last month.

"The most annoying man in cycling advocacy." LOL, do you mind if I adapt that as my social media bio, kind of what we did with the Streetsblog Chicago bio when someone wrote me, "Stop making the city worse"? Cheers.

Yes, "one or 2 of your photos aren't completed PBLs, but construction zones." If/when curbs or other concrete are installed here, drivers will be much less likely to illegally park here. Even flexi-posts will make it more obvious where they're supposed to park. A "P" symbol here would also help.

Once the bikeway is fully completed, more people will bike and scoot in it, and the learning curve for drivers will improve – it will become more obvious that if they illegally park, they will endanger and inconvenience people, so fewer folks will do that.

This will get concrete, or at least posts.

Bummed about 29F in early November? Here's something to look forward to when it's really cold: a proposal for the F 1/30 Critical Mass ride to head to Fuller's Pub, 3203 W. Irving Park, to see The Polkaholics, aka the annual Polka Ride.

I recently had dinner at a home in a classic Midcentury high-rise on Sheridan Road in Edgewater. It was more evidence of why locals must "Say no to Broadway upzoning!" so nobody else can enjoy this kind of rooftop view. 😉

Here's Streetsblog Chicago cofounder @stevevance.net and me around the site launch in 2013, and last Saturday at the Park(ing) Day celebration at Dovetail Brewing. He spends most of his time nowadays running the real estate data site @chicagocityscape.com, but still plays a key advisory role at SBC.

Several Chicago alders in Trump-friendly parts of town would likely be GOP elsewhere. That probably doesn't include Ald. Silverstein. But her West Ridge ward includes lots of Orthodox Jewish folks who like that Trump moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, wants public subsidies for private schools, etc.

I did a very fun multimodal trip around the southern 1/2 of Lake Michigan w/ old friends from @chicritmass.bsky.social:
Amtrak to Grand Rapids, MI
Bike to Luddington, MI
Ferry to Manitowoc, WI
Bike to Milwaukee
Amtrak to Chicago
+/- 225 miles of biking, mostly on trails. 👍

People for Bikes did that. The problem is that almost all quiet, low-traffic side streets are classified as "high-stress"(red) due to 30 mph signs, whereas cemetery roads where cycling is banned are rated as "low-stress" (blue). 🙃

Last night's after-work bike ride on Grace, in both directions. Don't tell anybody, but I did some cautious "contraflow" riding on the short one-way stretches. CDOT is considering adding contraflow bike lanes to make that safer and lawful. Legalize it!

Wow, this is the most Sammy Hagar-esque thing I’ve seen from a sustainable transportation advocate since the that time I wrote “Perennial candidate Paul Vallas: I can’t drive 25” in a headline. m.youtube.com/watch?v=85lG...

Lots of people were riding bikes and e-scooters in Chicago Monday in 90+F weather but, hey, some like it hot. It's a lovely 76F right now, but it will be 95 again tomorrow. Here on tips on how to make biking in such weather tolerable, or even enjoyable.

Sure, not absolutely every delivery can be made by bike or e-bike (or on foot, e-scooter, etc.) But lots of stuff can be delivered without driving, in many different situations. The bill would business owners a big incentive to do this, which would benefit everyone.
