4/ And it’s simply not realistic to expect the Democrats to win every election due to how polarised America is at the moment. No party could. So the chances of MAGA coming back to power is far from negligible.

3/ One of your two major parties has been captured by the far-right. Even with Trump gone, the media ecosystem which enabled his rise and the lunatic fringe to take over the party, remains.

2/ If the party and party leader go separate ways, the niche will go with the leader. So, if Trump is is gone that doesn't end MAGA. It just creates a bit of chaos until a new niche-inhabitor steps forward. And that’s the bigger problem that America faces.

1/ It's not about Trump as a "unique personality". It’s that he developed and inhabited a niche only big enough for one. But this niche can be more a media-personality-niche rather than a traditional political party leader niche.

2/ But the way the Republicans have been given a free pass is mind blowing. If centre-right politicians cannot or are unwilling to defend their party from the far-right, there’s no one else, not centre-left parties, not the media, who can parachute in and save them.

1/ As a non-American this is the part that truly baffles me. There’s a lot you can criticise the Democrats for. But they’ve done all u can expect a US party to do, they beat Trump in 2020. Given the ridiculous polarisation in the US, that’s as much anyone can do from outside the Republican party.
