The TL;DR is humans suffer from a host of cognitive biases, there is nothing rational going on. As a result, the winner of elections is simply randomness, driven by a bunch of random factors unrelated to policy or objective reality.
It's enough to make one a political Nihilist. 🤷‍♂️

I recommend a book called "Democracy for Realists." It's a thick read (meaning, on the academic side with a ton of references to other research).
