Gay man. Likes art, photography, cooking. Esperanto. Science adjacent. Probably should write a better bio.
With all the news items about people having to pay extra for their packages, the phishing email wasn't that surprising. #scam

Life when you’re married to a professor. Word has it that the spec midterm was “epic.”

Halloween challah horrors!

I bought a bread mixer, but even after an extended kneading, my dough was still glop. Fortunately, I do know how to hand knead. The bread went up a bit late, but it's looks okay.

In a moment of nostalgia, I bought some NECCO wafers last year. I found myself thinking "are those even good any more." Turns out the rolls are dated best by May 23, 2027.

I recently found that they released a 50th-anniversary release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the option of watching the movie in black-and-white up to when the doors open during "The Time Warp."

It hits differently in black-and-white. I noticed things I hadn't noticed before.

Oh, oh. What nasty stuff did I do?

I shared photos of art. From what I can figure out, Facebook considers late-medieval paintings of the Crucifixion objectionable.

Seriously. There are famous paintings that ought to pass muster but probably won't. This was tame stuff.

Facebook fears art.

A quick review of contemporary reaction shows that the lynching had broad support. The Sunday Herald and National Intelligencer of Washington DC called the acquittal "a disgraceful miscarriage of justice." How do you avenge a murder by killing those who were acquitted?

Columbus Day has its roots in the 1891 mass lynching of Italians in New Orleans. They were accused of murdering the police chief, acquitted, then lynched. It was the largest ethnic lynching in US history, part of our long tradition of demonizing immigrants.

Let's call it "Honor Immigrants Day."

Today is the centenary of the birth of Gore Vidal. Can we, as a sort of birthday present to Vidal all agree that William F. Buckley really was a crypto nazi?

I bought some kiloware recently (about half a kilo). I haven't had time to go through them all, but I started by getting all the off-paper stamps out of there and getting everything else flat and tidy. I also soaked about a hundred stamps. #philately #stampCollecting

Stamps! I cataloged 323 stamps today. This is the initial temporary arrangement before I get them into my stamp albums. #philately #stampCollecting

More DC madness!

The hooligans are clearly carousing in the street swigging from bottles of Veuve Clicquot. Utter lawlessness!

Call in the National Guard and tell them to start serving Dom Pérignon!

It’s chaos in these streets! Chaos I tell you! (Washington, D. C.)

I should have shared this with the post. It was a lovely Moravian Frankova (same as Blaufrankish, but grown in the Czech Republic instead of Germany).

I was introduced to Tom Lehrer’s music by a guy my sister briefly dated. I can’t remember his name, but I know all the words to Lehrer’s songs.

I was recently in Vienna and kept thinking about two of his songs, “Alma,” about Alma (Schindler) Mahler Gropius Werfel, and “The Weiner Schnitzel Waltz.”

Does your congressional district have wiggly, crooked, jagged boundaries? You may be suffering from gerrymandering.

It's odd that Richard Winger notes this as a barrier to ballot access for minor parties when these groups never bring up gerrymandering when talking about ballot access.
