In light of DNC developments (Scott Brennan losing seat on calendar committee) I'm re-upping my most detailed pieces on the problems with Iowa's traditional caucus system and why we need to change to a real presidential primary.

In the summer of 2007 I was professionally blogging & Joe Biden was an asterisk in the polls. I watched him at Iowa City's Ped Mall & Hamburg Inn taking all questions from all comers for 2 ½ hours straight. He could give a 10 minute answer full of detail and nuance on any subject.

Give you one guess which two old school caucus apologists from the literal Rolodex get quoted here.

Before naming 2028 nominee, Democrats have to decide which state will weigh in first
Democrats will pick their next presidential nominee in 2028, but before that happens, the party will have to decide which state gets to go first on the nominating calendar

I'm Actually Autistic.

I have a job, a good one that I love.

I pay taxes.

Had a few dates before I was married.

Have done a lot of writing, more news and opinion than poetry.

I can use the bathroom by myself, at least for now, but that may be TMI.

But I can't play baseball. ⚾

I've struggled a lot in recent months with my 40 year journey from the Clash left to the partisan mainstream, wondering what Joe Strummer would say.

Then yesterday I considered Peter Garrett who went from Midnight Oil ("Don't serve your country, don't serve your king") to the Australian cabinet.

The яaised fist logo isn't EXACTLY the flavor I was looking for… but 1st CD Dems need to accept the reality that "law professor from Iowa City for the 3rd time" is not a winning bio in the rural & river counties. Lots of questions for both of them and anyone else.

Register: "The new recount threshold means that Democrat Christina Bohannan would not have been allowed to request a recount in her 2024 race against U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in southeast Iowa's 1st Congressional District. Miller-Meeks won the race by 798 votes, or 0.2%." 🤔

No one should get "I went to space" credit for a suborbital flight except Alan Shepard (who walked on the 🌔), Gus Grissom (who would have been first on the 🌔 if he hadn't burned up alive), and the Russians whose booster didn't separate properly (who went up after the previous crew died on re-entry)

Give Schimel credit for accepting his loss. I can't stand election denialism, whether it comes from Rs complaining about "fraud" because the "wrong kind of people" got to vote, from Dems looking for a talking point for their next run...

I like it. Young, charismatic and a fundraising machine with nationwide connections. THIS could be the shot in the arm Iowa Dems have been looking for.

Among MANY other problems, the edict that all ballots must arrive by election day will disenfranchise many overseas voters (including troops and families!) currently covered under the UOCAVA Act. One more example of Trump's contempt for our troops. The thought probably never even crossed his mind.
President Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday that will require proof of U.S. citizenship on election forms. The move is in an aggressive push to catch and combat voter fraud, which is exceedingly rare but constantly cited by Trump as a reason he lost the 2020 election.
Trump Signs Executive Order Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Vote in Elections
Administration officials cited cracking down on immigrants illegally on voter rolls as one of the executive order’s main goals, amplifying Mr. Trump’s grievances about electoral integrity.

If Democrats are ever going to recover we need to be able to speak freely amongst ourselves - and we don't have an internal climate where we can do that. We have a LOT of what old school liberal Barney Frank called "Notsapostas."

"There are some big cultural divides between highly educated people who live in cities and everybody else. And to the extent that we make the cultural signifiers of these highly educated people the face and brand of our party, that is going to make everyone else turn against us."
4) We also discussed a tension in Shor's polling: Voters say that Dems should be more moderate, but also, to deliver "major change"

Shor argues that economic populism can appeal to such voters, and that Harris's promise to "take on landlords" was her best message www.vox.com/politics/403...

Raul Grijalva should not have run for re-election while terminally ill, and he's far from the first. I get the anger at of young voters at the political gerentocracy.
