I recall quite a few Tory MPs anticipating the inevitable a year or two ago, saying a spell in opposition would do them good as it provides better scope for clarifying what the Conservatives should stand for. How well
13 years in opposition helped Labour remains to be seen.

With Labour holding 63% of parliamentary seats it’s churlish to imagine a petition will facilitate an election in less than 4 years. Irrespective of how many signatures there are.
