Oh absolutely, and I don’t doubt that there is substantial cohort effects in those sorts of things (some people would change life decisions differently than others). It is a basic social good to give people a choice and a lot of people don’t have choice in l, say, our system. However.

I think trying to parse the definition of the word “prefer” here is pointless. Human migratory patterns have always followed economic considerations going back thousands of years. I’m not sure there is any utility in trying to understand much more than that.

People on both sides of the political aisle in America do it and it is just completely detached from reality. AFAIK the determinants of dropping birth rate are 1. modernity, 2. female political equality, and probably 3. phones, and there just isn't anything else that so much as makes a blip in that.
