A quick poem to momentarily distract you from all the shite happening around the world…
Horseshoe lagoon Pelicans, serene, circling at ease and perched on logs and high in waterlogged trees, unfortunate featured bin chickens hoot their distress at the loss of their usual roosts, a hyperactive grebe expending much dash cleans up their act with splendid panache, and the ducks look on with amusement and poise before panicking because of your noise!! I’ve had enough of the world in my face… here’s a poem in your face!!
Our time on Sparkle Dinner prepped we move to our deck and cushioned seat. The world returns to sparkle as the sun and horizon meet. Long day at work recedes slowly... in a glass and words well said. Late light ignites the softly moving leaves in green and red. It’s a special time of day though it doesn’t happen all the time. Or maybe we only notice when we relax with love and a little wine. Tiny insects swarm and dance on the southern breeze; cool and light. All is serene at the dimming of colour to the nightly black and white. Raucous birds last calls soften as, little by little, they settle into bed. The night comes delicately falling, and the time of sparkle lives now only in our heads. John Alley

Shadow-scape I always love seeing long shadows, and the time of day they bring, gums reaching across mauve meadows, as the Currawongs start to sing. I notice them in the car, travelling, to either city or the bush, at the days final unraveling, as you make that final push. The elongation twists perception, making the world seem out of shape, though, for me, it is perfection, enhancing the great Aussie landscape! This time warns us of night’s coming, dragged in by the shadows’ crawl, when the kangaroos start jumping, rushing blindly to the roadkill haul. And in the morning, shadows sweep somehow in the other direction, I guess, though I’m unsure how they make the leap, without making a mess. John Alley 31/5/2025 recut

Dragon’s Eye The dragon’s teeth like scimitar, rip and rend and tear your flesh, who’s body it is... he’s does not care, as long as it’s hot and fresh! The dragon’s eye is a thing to fear, for it cuts through facades to truth. The things inside, you loathe so clear, that cause surrender... to the brute. The dragon’s will seems paramount, and causes the bravest to doubt, and in that shift and roundabout... death thrives, on bravery’s drought. The dragon’s evil is legend and true, but his invincibility a lie, ride your faith and pay your due, strengthen your spirit and try. The dragon’s mouth bristles with teeth, impervious to weapon’s beat, in either eye your sword must sheath, for man to achieve the beast’s defeat. I’m not religious but I love churches… here’s an atmospheric shot inside the Bendigo Catholic Cathedral in Victoria, Australia.
The photo catches the late afternoon light coming through the cathedral’s mostly clear and yellow glass windows casting a beautiful golden light across the interior!!

Recent events hard me, surprisingly, thinking about ruin…
Ruin You see the heartbreak on any old drive, nothing obvious; just failure to thrive, sad little holdings all swallowed up whole, by agri-business; efficient and cold. Once proud farmyard presents a tangled wreck, farm machinery all rusted to heck, orchard remnants and the odd yellow bulb, bank’s forced torment or reluctantly sold. Slate grey desperation in tumbled slump, exposing floorboards and a red-gum stump, blazing pride in the family castle, succumbing to time‘s relentless battle. Tears swell anew as breath catches a hitch, bush as I knew it; gone… life is a bitch! John Alley 24/08/22

When words are said and actions done, and all life’s races are run not won, and all our efforts to find love are lost, we weigh our lives to judge the cost. But saying nothing and daring not, or staying back or in the cot, or never to have loved at all, will rob us of that clarion call. Flour bed The wind is a scour, for the man in the tower, who thinks that you stole his bread! With a manner dour, his expression sour, wishing you quite instantly dead!
