Plant ecologist at The University of Queensland. Rainforest lover and co-fur-parent of Rosalind and Barbara.
Yesterday we were treated to an inspirational seminar from Dr Laura Williams from @westsyduhie.bsky.social all about the importance of tree diversity, novel ways to quantify it and its consequences for how forests function. Good luck with the richly-deserved DECRA Laura!!! Ping @bmedlyn.bsky.social

My day in photos (hours of driving excluded). Lots of talk about trees and lidar with @lilydun.bsky.social and the brilliant folks at ArborMeta.
The access code to the cafe toilet was an unexpected challenge.

This Turraea pubescens (Meliaceae) we planted 1.5 yrs ago is loving life. Covered in flower buds already #dryrainforest

Nice to wake up to some weird magnoliid action this morning. Here is a flowering Eupomatia bennettii (small bolwarra) in our dry rainforest garden.

It was super exciting to see the progress that @ecologyella.bsky.social has made in revealing the reproductive timing of Australian rainforest trees! Another beautiful and engaging presentation.

A joy of the job is sharing moments like this after years of working together. May I present Dr Julian Radford-Smith @jradford-smith.bsky.social, with special guests Barbara and Rosalind. Photos taken by the wonderful @lilydun.bsky.social

Congratulations to @jradford-smith.bsky.social for making the cover of @ecography.bsky.social with his stunning photo of subtropical #rainforest at Mt Glorious, less than an hour from Brisbane in beautiful Queensland (1 of 2).

Nice flushes of new growth in a tiny patch of ”Woongarra Scrub” near #Bundaberg. Here we have yellow laurel (Cryptocarya bidwillii), hard Alectryon (Alectryon subdentatus) and Pleurostylia (Pleurostylia opposita).

Not a day goes by that I don’t give thanks for the Gympie bypass.

While I couldn’t join them, they at least represented the lab with our craptastic merch. They also got nasty scrub itch 😭😭😭. Don’t skimp on the tea tree oil next time!!!

Diospyros pentamera might win the “tidiest angiosperm” award.
April 28, 2025 at 6:58 AM
They went (without me!) to Woowoonga, Goodnight Scrub and Bulburin and saw some stunning trees, including this Ficus obliqua growing on a F. fraseri, grrrrr!!!

I had serious FOMO over the long weekend when @lilydun.bsky.social and @jradford-smith.bsky.social headed north to collect more data in scanned forest plots. Thanks to our amazing collaborators ArborMeta for scanning in such awesome places! 🧵 #lidar #TLS #FunctionalTraits #rainforest

A beautiful day in Lamington National Park with @lilydun.bsky.social and Dr Bill McDonald (rainforest royalty) identifying trees in a scanned plot #TLS #lidar #Brachychiton

I’m back in the beautiful Bunya Mountains, this time with @lilydun.bsky.social on the lookout for amazing #trees to capture with #lidar. The stylish ☂️ keeps your 2010 iPad dry @bapswijas.bsky.social 😭😭😭

The next exciting instalment from @jradford-smith.bsky.social on how climate filters rainforest tree strategies in the Australian subtropics. Now available in early view at @ecography.bsky.social

Final stop before heading back to Brisneyland was the Goomeri Emporium. I almost came away with another cowboy shirt #selfcontrol #nexttime

Here is the view to Nangur from Boat Mountain - imagine dense dry rainforest instead of pasture 😢 #landusechange
January 15, 2025 at 8:23 AM
The first highlight of Boat Mountain was seeing a couple of tree lice doing absolutely nothing in a Eucalyptus acmenoides #koalas #dropbears
January 15, 2025 at 8:23 AM
Then we headed to Nangur National Park and Boat Mountain Conservation Park. These reserves were once part of the same large patch of dry rainforest but are sadly now separated by a few kms of pasture. #dryforest
