I can find it but it's turned off already. So I guess not in UK either.

His days as a waste disposal professional are fin-ished.

The tail floats! I love it!

I went to a conference at the Exam Schools in Oxford a few years ago. Shiny stone stairs, no handrails! There was a lift, and on the second day I even managed to find it. On the first day I waited for everybody else to finish then went really slowly, sometimes crawling. Good look.

When he said - 20? years ago - that maybe women just weren't meant to do science, that's when he should have been made to step back from public life. He definitely should have been stopped from teaching then. It was the equivalent of a sign at the edge of a cliff saying "don't walk past this sign".

A colleeague and friend during our PhDs used to call them "maths biscuits" and I suspect he got them whenever he needed to do a hard bit of programming. He later went on to do difficult programming for DESY so maybe it worked but I suspect he was just awesome.

It is now but not so much when the people asked were at school. I'm 43 and I got like one lesson in little detail or depth.

Also during the 10,000 times we looked at literature by Jane Austen, George Eliot, etc. we didn't also learn that the mega-bucks people in the stories would have been rich from slavery so Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley were both fucking monsters.

Also I think the duration isn't covered - before I learned more I thought it was literally a few decades before abolition. Certainly we didn't learn that this started with the Tudors and was going on through all the king shit we were then taught.

Perfunctorily in mine, but not the huge number of people who were abducted and without context of quite how badly they were abused.

It's a badge but also a direct line to dial-a-nerd which gives it excellent value.

November 2023. Still in statutory period, if we can persuade men to fix what they didn't do right, but it's easier to just lean out of the window with a sealant gun and do it myself. Lizzie will hold my legs so I don't fall out.

The microscopy facility are trying to figure out why the microscope breaks when the room is a liveable temperature, at least, so there is hopefully an end point. But I'm going to take a holdall with winter clothes and a hot water bottle for next time.
November 13, 2025 at 12:55 PM
Normally they're a bit cold but this one is 17 degrees with windchill because the microscope gets its screen stuck if you let the room get any warmer. I was in there a couple of weeks ago and my fingers and brain didn't work properly. I'm going to bring winter clothes and hot water bottle next time.

Like all government scientific researchers do, e.g. UKAEA employees. This sounds very suboptimal.

As a dyspraxic, fairly sure my biological name is "Ow there's still a door there".

Oh that's why when the train stops there, everybody on the platform has a face on. They're just like that all the time.

Not being able to breathe well enough to walk for more than 2 minutes is a real mobility issue, o bugge

Better the sicking bug before surgery rather than after.

Also you could tell him basically the content of this comment. Sounds to me like that's his best learning outcome right now.

So if you watch how they learn something you already know in this context, you'll set yourself up well for when you all hit the wall together in 3 months' time and suddenly you're lost at sea with the others.
November 11, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Oh, one of *those*. I reckon sit down with him and say look, you know how to do this because you've done it before, but soon you're going to hit things none of you have done before, so the lesson you have to learn now is watch how the others learn new stuff from university teaching...
