On February 24 the National Hurricane Center released its 2024 Verification Report Preview. For every forecast interval from 12 to 120 hours NHC broke the records for forecast track accuracy. Day 5 forecasts of hurricane track are now more accurate than day 2 forecasts in the early and mid 1990s.

Sabres just recorded a third period where they scored a goal but recorded zero shots on goal. (wasn’t an own goal but an awarded goal). The NFL scorigami equivalent of a 6-1 win.

Isn’t it weird that at the end of Twister that Bill and Jo start making out in front of their grad students and postdocs? I have never been on a research cruise where the PIs start making out in front of everyone. Maybe it’s a severe storms thing that oceanographers miss out on.

I was fortunate enough to be there when Rick Jeanneret's name was forever raised into the rafters. Last year he stopped by Raleigh with some other Sabres legends and I was able to snag a photo with him.

15 years ago, we developed an idealized air-sea-wave coupled model of a hurricane making landfall. It originally ran on a HPC that is probably less powerful than your laptop.
Now that coupled model is providing a high-resolution 3km 10-day forecast for the entire archipelago of Indonesia, 4x a day.
