As we approach #nwav53, my dictation is channeling its inner Labov. Here I said “copy” but my phone heard “coffee.”

After talking about density plots today, I moved on to violin plots and, in a genuine no-pun-intended moment, I said "plot twist: it's just a density plot turned on its side." It was hilarious. And then someone made this for me.

It was SUCH AN HONOR to speak in the Michigan State University Linguistics Colloquium Series and hang out with their awesome faculty and students! Beautiful weather and beautiful campus!

I forgot to take a decent photo of so here's an awkward one of me with a scoop of the Spartan Swirl ice cream.

It’d be cool to have a Midwest grammar toggle and make this say “needs charged” instead.

Thankfully, the #BuckleyDrawFire appears smaller than it was last night, but it’s still a bit concerning to see a natural disaster so close to my office.

This is Penny Eckert's references section for her tribute to Bill Labov in Language in Society this month. It's not far off from the references sections in some of the stuff I write. 😆

Yes, this is true. Yes, pun intended. Yes, it’s whiter than I expected. And—for those of you aware of BYU’s dress and grooming standards—yes, I got a beard waiver because I’ve auditioned to be an extra in a small movie.

I got an Airbnb with some colleagues to do a writing retreat and hopefully knock out a big chunk of our tenure portfolios. Here we go!

And Andor and Rogue One–style prequel to the Incredibles. Gazerbeam couldn’t have been the only one involved in getting that computer’s password. He was probably the (second-to-last) in a long line of supers dying to get one step closer.

At the very bottom of that post, I have a delightful recording of someone who says "both" with l-intrusion and with LTH-affrication. So it's [boɫt̪͡θ] and it's amazing.

So, it ended up taking about 5 days, but it's done!

Makes me think of this line by C-3PO.

(But also this is super awesome and thanks for going above and beyond.)

Found this in my kid's room. Looks like she's gathering "evidence" to make a case for staying up later.

I also had some fun and tried some things like adding triple-color cardAs and removing candy cards entirely to see what happens.

Here are plots showing some highlights: number of turns a typical game has, how many shortcuts are taken, how many candy cards are taken, and how many tiles you move forward/ahead when you get candy cards.

Almost four years ago, I picked up a leaf off the ground at Lowe’s and called it “Goff” when it started to push out roots and baby leaves. Not sure why, but it has always been super lopsided and grows slowly in haphazard ways. But this year it flowered for the first time and they are gorgeous.

I guess some snow geese stop at a reservoir in Delta, Utah during their migration. And I guess they all decide to leave and settle in a nearby field all at once. So we went down there and saw them do that and it was kinda cool.
