He looked at me all confused, said “You can put all of your fingers out. I lost one of mine!”, holding up his hand, flashing a big grin. I was mortified, I felt horrible. But it also added a level of authenticity one can enjoy if you idolized sleazy action films. I think I’d just watched Kingpin.

The class almost entirely consisted of my friend and I playing each other with those guys lurking around, throwing out little tips here and there. The only lesson I remember was how to place the guiding hand on the table, which I did whilst tucking in my ring finger, mimicking my instructor’s hand.

…but if Buscemi had a little bit less sensitivity behind the eyes and a bit more of the unhinged. He liked to try and push you off balance to emphasize the importance of your center of gravity. I did take that lesson to heart, though, and pass it along whenever I find myself around a table (rarely).

As a freshman, the venue was absolutely a perk- but so was the entire experience. We had a main instructor who was some kind of Minnesota state champion, missing one finger which we decided had to have come from a gambling-related “accident”. One assistant looked almost identical to Steve Buscemi…

My friend and I ended up in pool class after realizing basketball tryouts were already annoying (and maybe I wasn’t gonna make the team anyways). There was a poster in the locker room for a Saturday 8am billiards class at a smoky club named The Green Room. It spoke to us. Our parents allowed it.

In 1998, I was destroyed by a child prodigy nicknamed “the glove“ in billiards. I’m not certain he really was a child prodigy, and I can’t say for sure whether or not I gave him that nickname, or if that had already been established. All I know is that kid made me look like a fool in pool class.

Man… you serve the people. Serve god in your own private time. Saying “dealing with” implies they have done something to address haters… I can’t even humor this fake gusto faux-relatable garbage.
